James Arthur Mills

With a BA in Art and further education and The Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture James Arthur Mills has been working with prominent artists and architects for thirty years on such notable design and restoration projects as The Gramercy Park Hotel, Carnegie Hall, Trinity Church, and The Woolworth Building in New York City. A master craftsman respected for his mold making and casting expertise, he has executed projects for Julian Schnabel, Francesco Clemente, George Segal, and Robert A.M. Stern.

Turning his considerable skills to painting, Mills brings a free hand and trained eye to his abstractions, applying rich layers of oil to canvas, panel, and paper with brush and knife. Referencing landscapes and found objects, his paintings articulate the intuitive. Noting Turner and Rothko influences, Mills’ work is a synthesis of form, color, and broken line delivered with confident authority. Random and seemingly accidental hatch marks provide atmospheric counterpoint to bold organic shapes and rich described fields of color.

Energetic sweeps of color and light meet solid, resolute foregrounds at the calm yet edgy horizons. Dark fields, rocky coasts, and gentle rises contrast expansive ethereal skies, provocative and arresting, juxtaposing suggestive illusion and the tactile reality of the medium in harmonious orchestration.
