JANE BURTON

Jane Burton is a San Francisco-based painter and sculptor known for her large-scale abstract expressionist works. Raised in a family where creativity was a shared language, she pursued formal training at the University of California, Davis, where she earned a BFA in painting and design under the mentorship of Wayne Thiebaud and Roy De Forest.

Jane’s tactile, intuitive process merges traditional and unconventional tools—often using her hands, arms, and found materials to create richly layered compositions. Her work explores the invisible threads that connect human experience, energy, and perception, drawing from the spiritual, emotional, and natural worlds.

Jane’s CV includes several prestigious exhibitions and artist residencies across the U.S. and abroad. In addition to her studio practice, she teaches advanced abstract painting workshops, guiding artists toward greater creative freedom and authentic expression. Her work is held in private, corporate, and gallery collections nationally and internationally.

I am a San Francisco-based painter and sculptor. Verbal expression has never come easily for me. Throughout my life, I’ve struggled to articulate what I feel and perceive. I’ve often moved through the world feeling unseen. Painting became a way to exist more fully—a way to be heard. My visual language allows me to venture beyond the limitations of words, enabling me to express my core essence in ways that words cannot.

Each time I face the canvas, I commit to stepping beyond thought and into feeling. Through large-scale abstraction, I access an internal rhythm—an intuitive pulse—where brushstroke, movement, light, and color carry the energy of something lived and shared. My process is tactile and exploratory: I work with my fingers, hands, and forearms, and embrace unexpected and unconventional tools. These invite chance and curiosity, disrupting control and inviting presence.

At its best, painting feels like a piece of music or a walk in the woods—alive, surprising, and essential. It evokes in me a sense of empowerment, clarity, and connection. When I can let go of judgment and expectation, the image that emerges is fresh and vital.

My work is inspired by the invisible threads—the vibrations and frequencies—that connect us to one another, to place, and to the greater fabric of existence. When I paint, I feel fully in tune with this expansive energy. It becomes a conduit for my own vitality and for the possibility of shared human experience.

In addition to my studio practice, I teach advanced abstract painting, helping other artists explore their intuitive process and creative freedom. I strive to create works that invite viewers in from afar—and, up close, offer something that informs, transforms, and lingers.
