PING LU
Ping Lu is a multi-disciplinary Chinese artist living and working in Los Angeles. She earned her Master of Fine Arts in Stage Design from the Shanghai Theatre Academy, where she developed a passion for visual storytelling. Early in her career, she designed sets for more than 100 productions in theater, television, and major opening ceremonies. Her expertise in stage design also shaped her academic path as a professor, teaching at art institutes and universities across Singapore, Malaysia, and China.
After moving to the United States and marrying acclaimed artist Hua Chen, Ping Lu shifted her focus fully to painting and fine art. She has since exhibited internationally, receiving awards in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. While her style has evolved over the course of her career, her guiding principle has remained constant: as she puts it, “I love bringing colors, lines, shapes, and images to life.”
Critics often compare Ping Lu’s artistic process to that of California master Richard Diebenkorn, whose “attack” on the canvas—layering form, color, and line in alignment with geometric abstraction—finds resonance in her own approach. Like Diebenkorn, Ping Lu embraces stylistic evolution, tension, and wit, blending abstraction with representation. Her recent work is distinguished by its bold geometric structures, dynamic layering, and radiant use of color.
Ping Lu paints with the fluidity of an abstract expressionist, yet her practice is grounded in rigorous design and compositional structure. The result is work that speaks directly and emotionally to viewers, while also guiding them toward a deeper sense of awareness and well-being. Her art, rich with color and vitality, continues to inspire and invigorate audiences worldwide.
